Organised Group Yatras (Kartik Parikrama)
The biggest batch parikramas happen in Kartik (October–November). Several organisations run free group yatras where accommodation (dharamshalas along the route) and simple meals (langar) are provided by seva organisations.
- Uttar Pradesh Braj Teertha Vikas Parishad organises the official Braj Parikrama
- Registration opens 1–2 months before Kartik; free for all pilgrims
- Medical teams travel with the group
- Batches leave Mathura every 2–3 days during Kartik
- Daily distance on foot: 8–12 km (rest stops every 3–4 km)
Can I Do It By Vehicle?
Yes — many devotees cover the route by car/tempo in 5–7 days, stopping at each major shrine. This is recommended for elderly pilgrims. Hire a local driver from Mathura (₹3,000–5,000/day) who knows all the smaller village stops.
Tip
For the foot parikrama, break-in your feet two weeks before with long daily walks. The first 3 days are typically hardest as the body adjusts. Most pilgrims find it becomes easier after Govardhan (day 4–5).
What to Carry
- Lightweight backpack (15–20 kg max)
- Cotton clothes (3–4 sets); wool shawl for Kartik nights
- Comfortable walking shoes + sandals for temple entry
- Water bottle (refill stations at major stops)
- First-aid: antiseptic, bandages, antacid tablets, ORS sachets
- ID proof and some cash (₹5,000–10,000 for the full route)
- Portable mobile charger
