Mathura and Vrindavan can be visited year-round, but the experience varies dramatically by season. The right timing can mean the difference between a serene pilgrimage and an uncomfortable ordeal.
The Best Season: October to March
Winter is peak season for good reason. Temperatures hover between 8°C and 25°C, making walking between temples pleasant. The air is clean, morning aartis are crisp and atmospheric, and crowds are manageable except during major festivals.
| Month | Temp (°C) | Crowd Level | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| October | 18–30 | Medium | Post-monsoon greenery, Diwali in Braj |
| November | 12–26 | Low–Medium | Peaceful darshan, Govardhan Puja |
| December | 8–22 | Medium | Winter aartis, clear mornings |
| January | 6–18 | Low–Medium | Sankranti kite festival, makar snan |
| February | 10–24 | High | Holi season begins in Barsana |
| March | 14–30 | Very High | Holi — the biggest festival |
April to June: Avoid If Possible
Summers are brutal. May temperatures frequently cross 45°C. The white marble of Prem Mandir becomes too hot to stand on barefoot. Most pilgrim groups avoid this period entirely.
Tip
If you must visit in summer, restrict temple visits to before 9 AM and after 5 PM. Carry a water bottle, wear light cotton, and use the Yamuna riverside ghats for shade.
July to September: Monsoon Magic
Monsoon transforms Braj into lush greenery. Janmashtami (August) falls in this season and draws millions to Mathura. The humidity is high and travel can be disrupted by rain, but the festival energy is unmatched.
Note
Janmashtami 2025 falls on August 16. Book accommodation at least 2–3 months in advance if you plan to attend.
Festival Calendar Quick Reference
