Lathmar Holi at Barsana — What to Expect

Barsana Lathmar Holi is the flagship event. The legend: the men of Nandagram (Krishna's village) come to Barsana (Radha's village) to tease the women, and the women chase them with lathis.

  • Venue: Shri Radhika Mandir (Shriji Temple) on the hilltop — most photogenic
  • Timing: Activities begin from 10 AM; main Lathmar starts around 1–2 PM
  • What to wear: Old clothes you don't mind getting stained; secure shoes
  • Security: Cordons separate participants from spectators; stick to spectator areas
  • Photography: Allowed from designated areas; protect camera from colour

Phoolon Ki Holi at Banke Bihari

One week before the main Holi, priests at Banke Bihari Temple shower pilgrims with flower petals from above. It is enchanting and one of the most photographed moments of the Holi season.

Note

Entry to Phoolon Ki Holi at Banke Bihari is free but the temple becomes very crowded by 10 AM. Arrive by 8:30 AM to get a good position inside.

Safety and Practical Tips

  • Colour: Use herbal/natural colour (gulal); avoid synthetic colour which can cause skin irritation
  • Protect: Cover eyes with sunglasses, apply coconut oil to skin and hair before attending
  • Valuables: Leave expensive jewellery at the hotel; use a waterproof pouch for phone
  • Solo women: Join a guided group or go with a mixed group; avoid isolated lanes during celebrations
  • Getting there: Book a car or taxi in advance — public transport is severely overcrowded during Holi
  • Accommodation: Book 3–4 months in advance for Barsana/Mathura/Vrindavan during Holi week

Tip

The most underrated experience: attend Mangala Aarti at Banke Bihari Temple the morning after main Holi. The temple is decorated with flowers and colour, the air smells of gulal, and there are very few tourists — a magical atmosphere.
